Two rules to remember:

  • Maintain a healthy skepticism
  • Verify the Buyer or Seller

The Trader Online Security Team strongly recommends that you download the Phishing Filter offered by Microsoft Internet.  The Phishing Filter acts as a warning system for individuals.  If an unsuspecting person were to click on a link that takes them to a phishing or fake website, Microsoft Internet will send you a warning in the form of a pop-up.  For more information on the Phishing Filter please visit http://www.microsoft.com/protect/products/yourself/phishingfilter.mspx .  To see how the Phishing Filter works please view the example below in the Latest Fraud Activity section.

Please thoroughly explore our site to understand the risks of making an unsecured online transaction.  As a result, you should feel more comfortable about fraud and how to protect yourself from it.  TraderOnline.com strives to create a safe environment for bringing buyers and sellers together and our best ally is a well-informed customer.

LATEST FRAUD ACTIVITY!

Below are examples of  phisher emails and spoof sites that resemble  legitimate correspondence from TraderOnline.com or Dominion Enterprises.  Emails and spoof sites may include graphics and formatting that make it look official.  Phisher emails will appear to be very urgent and usually threaten to close your account if the requested information is not provided in a given time frame.  PLEASE NOTE:  We will never ask for your password or other personal information via email.  If you have posted your name, phone number, email address, etc. on the Internet (for any reason) then this could be why you received an email.

If you have seen phisher emails or spoof sites similar to the examples below, please forward the email and/or link to fraud@traderonline.com.

Account Takeovers:

If you receive an email that resembles the one shown below DO NOT CLICK ON ANY LINKS.  If you receive reports from anyone questioning your ad listing please contact the Ad Verification Team at 866.302.2218 or send an email to verify@traderonline.com for further assistance. In the email shown below hackers are enticing customers to log into their accounts by saying they (the customer) have two ads listed with different asking prices.  By clicking on the link provided you are being directed to a phisher site promting you to login to your account.  When you fill out the requested login information you are giving the criminal your username and password, at this time the criminal has access to your account and will login as you and change the email address, asking price, contact number, mileage and possibly your ad text.  If you have responded to a email similar to this please contact the Ad Verification Team IMMEDIATELY.

Third-Party Transactions:

The email below says Dominion Enterprises will act as the middle man in this transaction.  DOMINION ENTERPRISES NOR ANY OF ITS SUBSIDIARIES WILL HANDLE ANY TRANSACTIONS BETWEEN BUYERS AND SELLERS.

Payment Protection Scam:

This phisher claims that Dominion Enterprises offers a Purchase Protection Program.  DOMINION ENTERPRISES DOES NOT OFFER A PAYMENT PROTECTION PROGRAM.

 Business Purchase Protection: Overview

Dominion Enterprises Business helps protect buyers against fraud and material misrepresentation through its Business Purchase Protection program. This program is provided for free on all eligible capital equipment transactions completed on the Dominion Enterprises sites on or after December 15, 2006. There's no sign-up, opt-in, or registration necessary, however the start of a transaction using this service is restricted. Only a Dominion Enterprises power seller can start a transaction. Your capital equipment purchase is protected for up to $20,000 or the equipment purchase price, whichever is lower.

If you are considering the possibility to buy through the Business Purchase Protection program we recommend following the transactions guidelines exactly, as the rules are made for your protection, as buyer, as well as for the sellers safety. Contact the seller with your name, address and phone number so he/she can start a transaction. Once started , we will contact you with the payment and delivery instructions.

What the Business Purchase Protection program covers
Business Purchase Protection covers buyers who have completed a capital equipment transaction on the Dominion Enterprises Business site for numerous types of deliberate and material misrepresentation by the seller. The protection program provides coverage for situations such as:

  • Paying for an item and never receiving it.
  • Sending a deposit for an item and never receiving it (restrictions apply to non-refundable deposits.)
  • Paying for and receiving an item of a type, make, or model that is different than what was described in the seller's posting.
  • Paying for and receiving an item with undisclosed damage, provided the cost of repair exceeds $500.
See a list of coverage situations.

"Capital equipment" categories include:

  • Agriculture & Forestry > Tractors & Farm Machinery
  • Automotive > Cars
  • Automotive > Classic Cars
  • Automotive > Motorcycles
  • Automotive > Other vehicles > ATVs & Quads | Boats & Watercraft | Campers & Caravans | Commercial Vehicles | Disabled Vehicles | Trailers | Other
  • Construction > Heavy Equipment, Trailers
  • Food Service & Retail > Concession Trailers & Carts
  • Healthcare, Lab & Life Science > Imaging & Aesthetics Equipment
  • Industrial Supply, MRO > Fork Lifts & Other Lifts
  • Manufacturing & Metalworking > Manufacturing Equipment
  • Manufacturing & Metalworking > Metalworking Equipment
  • Office, Printing & Shipping > Commercial Printing Presses

What the Business Purchase Protection program does not cover
Business Purchase Protection is not recourse for buyer's remorse or a replacement for a buyer doing careful research to make an informed purchase. Business Purchase Protection only covers cases of deliberate fraud by the seller. Older equipment in particular requires careful research by the buyer. The following situations are some examples of what is not covered by the Business Purchase Protection program:

  • Normal wear and tear, which may be significant in older pieces of equipment, is not covered.
  • If the purchase was not completed on the Dominion Enterprises Business site within one of the designated Capital Equipment categories (see above), it is not covered.

See a list of non-coverage situations.

Fraudulent Buyers:

Sellers please be cautious of emails that you receive with these questions.  A number of sellers have reported receiving the exact same email from different email addresses. Take note of the poor punctuation.
